Business Before AI (Solopreneur)

A founder came to me recently, excited.

He had ChatGPT writing his content. AI handling his emails. Automations running his follow-ups. A lean, beautiful one-man operation.

One problem: he still had no paying customers after four months.

The tools were flawless. The business fundamentals weren't there.

This is the conversation nobody wants to have in all the AI hype: tools multiply what you already have. If what you have is an unvalidated idea, they'll help you execute it faster, straight into a wall.

Building a one-man company with AI is genuinely possible. I believe in this model. But it starts with questions, not apps.

The ones I'd make every solo founder answer first:

- Who exactly is your customer — not a demographic, a real person with a specific pain?

- Have you talked to 10 of them before building anything?

- Will they pay or just say they love the idea?

- What's your actual acquisition channel for the first 10 customers?

- Is this profitable at small scale, or only at fantasy scale?

- What's your unfair advantage and is it real or imagined?

AI handles execution. You still have to do the thinking.

The solo founders I see thriving in Singapore and across SEA right now aren't the ones with the most tools. They're the ones who asked harder questions before they built then used AI to run circles around larger, slower competitors.

Know where you're going first. Then build the road.
