Advice
Dealing with startup founders who don't heed advice can be challenging.
Usually, I will do 3 strikes before deciding to drop them from the investment portfolio.
3 types of founders:
- listen but inaction
- don't listen but own action
- listen but own action
There have been quite a few of these founders in the course of startups that I invested in. And usually only leads to 1 path...closure and legal.
- Stay only in expensive hotels
- Eat only in expensive restaurants
- Hire people based on gut feeling alone
- Stay cosy and not willing to be out of your comfort zone
- Falling back onto old ways of doing things
- Insecure and pushes out that toxicity to everyone to suffer together
- Enjoy creating drama to be self-importance
It’s like asking a friend for directions and then veering off the path they suggested. Not only are you wasting their time, but you’re also missing out on a shortcut or a hidden gem they know about.
Plus, it can make them feel like their advice wasn’t valued. So, if you’re going to ask for someone’s input, be prepared to actually use it. It shows that you respect their opinion and that you’re serious about making progress.
